The Situation

This case study explores the successful recruitment of a Senior Director for a mid-market structured debt provider in the North West of England. With facilities extending up to £30 million and a focus on multiple sectors, our client sought to strengthen their market presence in the region.

Recognising the challenges they had faced in the past in filling this crucial role, they engaged Future_find to leverage their local networks and drive the hiring process.

Position: Director

Product: Structured Debt

Location: Manchester

Salary: £110,000 + Package

  1. Known person in the local market, with an active network of introduction opportunities.
  2. Technical expert with ability to assess and prioritise key lending opportunities.
  3. Track record of hitting lending targets year-on-year in previous roles.
  4. Ability to act as a line manager and develop junior team members, whilst still operating as an originator.

Challenges

There were two very clear challenges for the recruitment process of this Director:

1. Given how tight-knit the local market is, it is highly competitive for genuinely talented originators who can add value and grow your business.

2. A knock-on effect of this is that the basic salary of a Bank, can sometimes underwhelm when compared to some competitors in the local market - i.e. debt funds.

Each of these required Future_find to focus on the benefits of this role and client which were unique unto themselves and to not try and compete purely on a financial basis.

Method

Given how small the market is in this region, we took a very delicate approach to attracting the right candidate:

a) We identified a candidate from a competing firm who had demonstrated exceptional success in building an established network. Recognising the delicate nature of this headhunting process, we prioritised relationship-building and took the time to establish trust and rapport with the candidate. Through persistent efforts, we effectively communicated the increased opportunities and advantages our client could offer, ultimately securing initial meetings with the candidate.

b) As the client-candidate relationship grew, we worked closely with both parties to facilitate the recruitment process. We highlighted the unique value proposition our client presented, emphasising the chance to develop local networks and seize lending opportunities in the North West region. By showcasing the potential for professional growth and the alignment of their goals, we successfully attracted the candidate to the position.

Outcome

The recruitment of the Director proved to be a resounding success for our client. With the expertise and industry reputation of the hired candidate, the North West patch has become a key market for our client's structured debt services. The Director's established networks and deep understanding of the local market have significantly expanded lending opportunities.

David took the time to thoroughly explain the scope and opportunity of this role, he was on the other end of the phone when needed and helped to co-ordinate me through the process with patience, even when schedules were tight. I was confident in their discretion throughout.
