The Situation

The client - a newly established Private Equity firm, focusing on investments of up to £50m across FS and Tech - engaged Future_find to hire a Fund Finance Manager, as they recognised the need to build an in-house finance team and transition away from outsourced financial functions.

  1. ACA Qualified Accountant with relevant sector experience. 
  2. Outgoing personality and relationship builder to help manage stakeholder relationships. 
  3. Eager to learn from and work with outsourced finance team at first. 
  4. Able to contribute to building out systems and infrastructure for internal finance operations. 

Challenges

This was an incredibly varied role, with an incredibly early-stage employer. Within this context, there were several challenges which arose during the recruitment process: 

1. Finding a candidate who was comfortable taking on a multi-faceted role and embracing the variability and diversity it entailed.

2. Finding a candidate who viewed the opportunity as an exciting opportunity vs. risky move. 

In addition to this, the candidate also would have to be qualified for the role.   


Method

Addressing the challenges, Future_find employed a soft-skill-first search approach.

a) Taking some comfort in the ACA (or similar) professional qualification, we sought out individuals of a reasonably junior-level profile, who demonstrated a willingness to embrace a mixed and varied role. 

b) Our strategy also involved showcasing the growth potential and unique career trajectory offered by the position, differentiating it from other 'safer' opportunities in the market. 

By emphasising the value of the story behind the opportunity, we managed to attract candidates who aligned with the client's vision and culture. The technical considerations were then qualified through a series of interviews with a wider finance resources. 

Outcome

The selected candidate possessed the ACA qualification and brought relevant industry experience to the table. However, what truly set them apart was their exceptional attitude and alignment with the client's desired culture. The new Fund Finance Manager demonstrated a strong desire to contribute to all aspects of the start-up's financial requirements, showcasing their dedication and enthusiasm for the role.
